Some of you may understand why today, Monday, October 20th, 2014 is a monumental day. For those of you that do not, today is the day that Marcel the Shell has resurfaced on the internet. Who’s Marcel the Shell, you might ask? Here’s some background info.
Back in August 2010, this little stop-motion treasure popped up on the interwebz. What appears to be a cute, elementary school video project is actually the award-winning, stop-motion work of SNL alumna Jenny Slate and director/producer Dean Fleischer-Camp. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On was awarded Best Animated Short at AFI FEST 2010, and was selected to show at Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Marcel (voiced by Slate) took the internet by storm with his quirky responses to some of life’s greatest mysteries.
The following year, Slate & Fleischer-Camp posted another installment of Marcel the Shell. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Two hit YouTube in November 2011. Marcel even came out with his own book Marcel the Shell: Things About Me in 2012. However, since then, Marcel had been absent from the internet until this glorious day.
The return of Marcel the Shell, after a 3 year hiatus, made headlines. Literally. TIME, Huffington Post, and People are just a few to report on the return of the internet’s favorite walking, talking shell. This third installment of Marcel the Shell coincides with the release of Marcel’s new book, Marcel the Shell: The Most Surprised I’ve Ever Been which releases tomorrow!
Oh yeah, and as if these videos weren’t adorable enough, Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp got married in 2012. So if you haven’t been graced with Marcel the Shell’s presence yet, do yourself a favor and watch all 3 installments right now. It’s worth 10 minutes of your life.
