So April is almost over (already?) and May is right around the corner. This year, we’ve been given some great movies so far: The Lego Movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, just to name a few. However, the month of May will be bringing us some serious moviegoer-musts. Here’s a list of a few of those:
1. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (May 2)
First up on the list is the 2nd installment of the Spider-Man reboot. Everyone and their mother loves Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s on- and off-screen relationship. Everyone also happens to love Spider-Man; especially when there are not one, not two, but THREE villains he will be put up against in this film. You have a scary-looking Jamie Foxx as Electro, a roided-out Paul Giamatti as The Rhino, and pretty boy/relative newcomer Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin. Admittedly, three antagonists seems like a bit much for one movie, but enough promise lies in the talent.
2. NEIGHBORS (May 9)
Next we have the family vs. frat comedy, Neighbors. You have Seth Rogen playing a family man who moves in next door to a frat house. Two of those frat boys just so happen to be Zac Efron and the world’s second-favorite Franco, Dave. Coming from the comedic direction of Nicholas Stoller, who brought us the hilarious movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, we are almost guaranteed 1.5 hours of piss-your-pants laughs.
3. GODZILLA (May 16)
The huge nerd inside of me was at Comic-Con 2012 when it was announced that a Godzilla movie was in the works. They showed us a small little teaser trailer and I was absolutely floored. Every subsequent trailer that has come out for this movie has been incredible. I know trailers aren’t the best way to judge how good a movie is going to be, but these have been REALLY good. The movie has also been incredibly cast, with stars like Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen (Mary-Kate & Ashley’s younger sister), Ken Watanabe, and many more. I’ve never been so excited to see an over-sized lizard on the big screen since Barney. Or Jurassic Park. Same thing.
4. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (May 23)
So this is the second comic book movie entry on this list. The nerd inside of me is really showing. Anyway, I feel like a lot of people have been waiting for this one to come out. Everybody received the first installment, X-Men: First Class, really well. First Class brought us a very talented young cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult. This time around, the cast from the first series of X-Men movies (Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, etc.) will join forces with the newbies in an epic timeline-crossing adventure to save humanity (or mutant-ity?).
5. MALEFICENT (May 30)
This is going to be a really interesting one. It seems that Disney has been somewhat hit-and-miss on their blockbuster projects lately. However, Maleficent is their big chance to turn that around. They have all the star power in the world with Angelina Jolie playing the title character. She is given a fantastic supporting cast with Elle Fanning (Dakota’s little sister) and one of my favorite actors today Sharlto Copley (of District 9 and Elysium fame). In Disney folklore, Maleficent is considered one of the most evil of all Disney villains. This movie explores the Mistress of Evil’s past from a unique perspective: her own.
