Not So Silent Night meets PASSION

I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! And in typical American fashion, as the spooky decorations are now passé it’s time to get ready for Christmas. No. This isn’t a post about Christmas music, but what better way to bring in winter break than with your favorite (mainstream) hipster bands all in one place!? The Not So Silent Night or NSSN, concert is this year on December 7th and 8th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland (second weekend of dead week). Tickets went on sale yesterday and it sounds like the best possible way to get ready for…finals(?)

The line-up this year may be a bit tricky to choose between.

Night One includes Jack White, The Shins, Metric, Of Monsters and Men, Gaslight Anthem, and Two Door Cinema Club

Night Two is The Killers, M83, Passion Pit, Grouplove, and Imagine Dragons
After Jack White was clearly the star of the Bridge School Benefit night one is looking pretty strong. But the release of Passion Pit’s new album Gossamer and their single Take a Walk, that puts me in the mood to do just that, make night two really tempting.
Passion Pit has always been the one band I can rely on to put me in a good mood and get energized, but Gossamer has a bit of a different feel to it. The topics covered in their new album include suicide, mental illness, alcoholism, and economic disparity. It’s clear that the lead singer has had a rough year battling his own bi-polar disorder, but he’s said that he’s doing well and on the rise. As with all artists though, great pain creates great music. The sophomore album delivers the Passion Pit rhythm we all look forward to but also some slower, more powerful medleys. The song “I’ll Be Alright”, an obvious testament to his mental health, is surprisingly up-beat as he discusses his struggling relationship with his girlfriend because of his disorder. So, I do feel guilty saying that these heart-breaking songs create stellar dance music, but that’s always been this band’s forté. If you want to jump and sway to some colorful lights, be sure to take a listen.

So on that note, I highly encourage all of you to check out this years Not So Silent Night, and I’m sure whichever night you pick you’ll bring in the holidays on a high note.

So take a night (or two) off from the depths of Main Stacks during dead week to check this out!
