Weekly Beats September 28th!

Weekly Beats are back for the school year, helping you discover everything music related!  We’ll post new releases, playlists, upcoming show info, music videos – anything to help you to stay in the music loop with your crazy schedules. This semester I’m very happy to introduce our newest contributor, Arianna.  Here’s a little blurb to get to know us better. Enjoy and stay tuned!

Sarah Agopian right up in hurr, the creator of “Weekly Beats”- a little somethin’ somethin’ to satisfy your musical desires. I’m an OC transplant, majoring in Media Studies during my time here at Cal.  I’m an avid coffee drinker, instagrammer (@sarah_agopian) and play a mean game of beer pong.  I also work at Ici Ice Cream and watch way too much Netflix and Hulu Plus. Some of my favorite artists at the moment include YACHT, Santigold, Dillion Francis, Tanlines, Mr. Little Jeans, The Lumineers.  Best performance I saw during summer? Hands down, Justice at Outside Lands – dreams came true that night.

Ey Ey the name is Arianna B. Jukes, the new addition to the weekly beats blog that is about to be off the hook. I am super stoked for this, seriously, you should all be as well. Here be the basic facts about yours truly. The need to know about ABJ 1.) Nickname: ABJ, Aunna, Aria, Fabulous, Half-Ass and A1 2.) Hometown: Santa Monica Represent 3.) Major: Media Studies Rhetoric Double Major 2015 4.) Favorite Bands: I happen to throw that word around a lot, but the constants = Modest Mouse, The Pixies, The Growlers 5.) Favorite Local venue: The Warfield

College students & music = PB & J status. What do you think gets us through hundreds of pages of reading, tedious problem sets, writing theoretical papers about nonsense and studying into the wee hours of the morning?  MUSIC. Come on, Pandora and Spotify are probably the only things keeping you awake at 2am in the dungeon we call Main Stacks during finals.  These music sites appeal to us because they are free while also cater to our music choices by allowing us to create our own music stations and playlists.  But if you’re an avid music listener like myself, you’ve most likely noticed what I have – that these sites now force us to listen to audio ads!  My current favorite is Adam Bovine from Workaholics publicizing his new movie Pitch Perfect on Spotify (Milk that persona for what it’s worth, buddy, because it’s only gonna last for so long). Also, once you start listening to Pandora on a consistent basis, your stations start to sound exactly the same.  Let’s just say I sincerely regret ever going through my Beilber faze…So after my long rant let me get to the point – Songza.com is where it’s at.  A few months ago I was overwhelmed by the accumulated disappointment of Pandora and Spotify until I discovered this heavenly site.  Forget audio ads and similar sounding playlists; Songza is 100% free, has no commercials and hosts thousands of playlists made by music experts.  WHAT. UP.

My favorite part of the site is the changing homepage that alters throughout the day depending on the time.  Say it’s Thursday night.  Logging onto Songza you get to choose the mood you’re in, which in the case of the pictures above consist of “Unwinding After a Long day” to “Pre-gaming with Friends.”  After clicking on your mood, genres will pop up including rock, rap, hits, indie, electro, etc.  Finally, a list of playlists will appear on your screen.  Choose one and you’ll be on your merry way, doing whatever you’re in the mood for! I’m telling you Songza reads minds.  Don’t believe me – try it out, my friends, and discover the magic yourself. No more hours wasted crafting playlists for working out, studying, or partying, Songza does it all and undoubtedly lives up to their slogan, “Good music makes good times.”
