Apparently the highly communicable condition of sequelitis continues to infect Hollywood, with no hope of a cure in sight. Word on the street is that the Farrelly Brothers, the long-ago princes of the gross-out, are talking about doing a sequel to one of their biggest hits, Dumb and Dumberer. Deadline.com reports that now the duo is done with their Three Stooges venture, their looking to make the magic happen all over again. I’m not so sure about this. I don’t think they’ve made a good movie since 2001’s Osmosis Jones, and the total lack of any need for this sequel makes me really hesitant to even dip my toes in the water. Perhaps they’ve wanted to make this movie for some time now, but come on. I think I can speak for most people when I say that, at least from a first impression, this sounds like an idea that’s bad for business.
However, the two are joined by Sex Drive helmers Sean Anders and John Morris. If you haven’t seen Sex Drive, you should. It’s great. It’s a sex comedy that’s funny in all the right places, and it’s bolstered by a bunch of wonderful actors including Seth Green and James Marsden. By the way, these two are the same guys who pulled off Hot Tub Time Machine. ‘Nuff said. Given that history, I’m sure Dumb and Dumber 2, or whatever it’s gonna be called will turn out alright.
My issue is just with the idea of artists retreading old ground when they’ve run out of ideas. I mean, if the Farrelly Brothers were as passionate about this project as they’d like you to believe, why hire others to handle the script? It’s their baby, shouldn’t it be their total creation? In my opinion, outsourcing the writing duties is just more proof that these guys have genuinely lost their creative touch.
Look at the old trailer to remember how good it used to be…
