American Idol Reject blames Lady Gaga for his elimination

On the last episode of American Idol, “America” booted the straight twink with the ridiculous hair Colton Dixon.  To some this was a shock (but not to others who remembered that only one person wins and that it was only a matter of time before the superior singers would trounce him).

To what do we owe this blessing?  Well, some would say that his poor performance of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” might have something to do with it.  But today on Access Hollywood Live, Colton betrayed his true belief in the reason for his ouster.  Apparently, he doesn’t fault his performance, but claims that “song choice got the better of me this week,” referring to his choice of a Lady Gaga song.

This is certainly a reasonable deduction (as are his qualms about the “TV edit” which does few performers any favors on American Idol), since he doesn’t really have Gaga’s raw animalistic swagger or performance abilities, not to mention that he probably hasn’t had any good sex or experienced the kind of intense romantic passion in his young life that the song requires.  It never would have worked on him, no matter how much “edge” he thinks his mohawk patch of two-toned hair adds to his personality.

However, he doesn’t say that he wasn’t suited to the song.  Rather, he felt he had abandoned his core audience with whom he has “taken a stance on [his] faith” and that he should have “chosen a song that better represented [him] as an artist.”  This was why, he explained, that he apologized when he was eliminated- for singing a song by an artist he assumes his fans harbor negative opinions of (because she doesn’t organize her life and work around conservative Christian values).  As an amelioration of this, his future plans involve a “Christian rock” album, a problematic genre at best.  Maybe if he’s lucky he can get on one of those Worship compilations plugged in cable infomercials.

So from this we gather, it is because conservative Christians hate Lady Gaga that Colton Dixon was eliminated?  Colton did it ever occur to you that few people, Christian or not, simply didn’t think the combination of the painted-on red leather pants (over those chicken legs), long-tailed coat and sub par performance had anything to do with this turn of events?

There are a few things wrong here.

1)  You are not your core audience Colton.  Representing yourself better as an artist doesn’t mean catering to their whims.

2)  He assumes that the fan base keeping him there was a core of devotees who liked him because he was obnoxiously Christian, more than for his music.  So what, the rest of us who thought you have a lovely voice don’t exist because we’re just a bunch of hedonistic sinners awaiting the slide into purgatory?

3)  He assumes that all his fans refused to vote for him because they are Christians who hate Lady Gaga for being a progressive figure rather than a conservative one.  If you had performed the song better, you would have gained new fans.

4)  Just because you’re Christian doesn’t mean you have to work exclusively within conservative Christian values in creating music.  That limits your growth and influence as an artist, it doesn’t augment it.  You will literally just preach to the choir and say little of substance as a result.

Colton really did have a naturally beautiful voice, there is no denying that whatsoever.  And a belief in religious experience certainly worked for Brian Wilson.  His sense of harmony and instrumentation is a much better testament to some form of divinity than the work of the artists in the Christian Contemporary section at the music store.  By offering a transcendent beauty to the listener, many of Wilson’s creations (like Pet Sounds and Smile) offered a religious experience without sacrificing his personality as an artist and spoke to whole generations of people.  And continues to do so decades later.  He represented himself as an artist and reached millions by looking inside himself and extracting what his own mind came up with, and working to be as truthful to his vision as possible.  Not by looking to moralistic churchgoers for what would sell to them.

Bien Amicalement

On the Next America’s Next Top Model

So this week on ANTM: British Invasion, Tyra’s new experiment in developing nationalistic antipathy between England and the United States, they once again made painfully clear right away who was going home.  If you’ve watched every cycle of this show out of a bizarre fascination with Ms. Banks’ seemingly bottomless narcissism and her ability to turn every individual’s story into a story about herself, then surely you’ve picked up on how to figure this out.  The one who talks about their emotions the first time you see them, when no one else is-they’re definitely on the chopping block.  And so when Kyle (aka “Next Doorsia”) started talking about how close she is with another contestant and how she’s not going home-you know she’s going home.  Bye bye Kyle, I hope you really do have “smiles for miles,” as your ANTM music video says- its a long trip home.

With the forgone conclusion of Next Doorsia’s departure, the teaser for next week’s episode, with a photo challenge involving sartorial concoctions made from Hello Kitty merchandise, offered this surprisingly concise visual thesis on the division of labor in the world of modeling:

Notice the cargo shorts, ratty t-shirt and lackadaisical body language of the guy holding the light.  Now look at the model, wearing a dress made out of Hello Kitty lunch boxes.  Show me love.

Aguilera shows no love for Bieber, and gives him the cold shoulder instead on The Voice.

Though Kelly Osbourne may hate Christina Aguilera for calling her fat years ago (and maybe some other things, either way get over it Kelly), I think that hot mess Xtina just earned some cool points on last night’s episode of The Voice.

When Justin Bieber came by the judges’ chairs, you could see that as he got to Christina, she quarter-heartedly reached out her hand.  She made no effort to get up or lean forward, but he moved in further anyways, and she turned her head as he forced a pathetic imitation of a hug and cheek to cheek smooch.  She was clearly not interested in investing any energy in this charade.  As he moved on she gave him a most unmistakable stink-eye, looking thoroughly NOT pleased.  We do not know exactly why, but it was hard to miss the shockingly deadly disgust written on her face.

http://www-hollywoodlife-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/041812_JustinChristina_ftr120418094544.jpg

When the last episode of the show plugged an appearance by the odiously overhyped little horndog Justin Bieber on the results show, I was wondering what Aguilera would do when forced to interact with him.  I imagined something would go down since Aguilera is a vocal advocate of LGBTQ rights, who earned eternal love from the community for the song “Beautiful,” and its music video (specifically for its visual and thematic recognition of the struggles of the LGBTQ community).  As someone who used her star power to show images of men kissing in closeup and transvestite performers as connected by their ostracism to other marginalized people, she is light years apart from the teenage pop sensation Bieber.  JB gave an interview to Rolling Stone recently stating that being gay is a choice (as opposed to something innate, though he admits it’s nobody else’s business).  Unfortunately he complicates this issue of choice further by moralizing about women who believe in the right to choose, stating that abortion is wrong (“I don’t really believe in it” because it “is like killing a baby”), even in pregnancies caused by rape (because “everything happens for a reason”).  Granted, this is the opinion of a barely educated, semi-talented teenager, cloistered within his own fame, who has shamelessly and creepily made consistent sexual advances on women 20 years older than him (I’m lookin at you Chelsea Handler) since he became a star (whether for laughs or for real, it was not cute).  Though I realize his education consists of an hour with a tutor whenever he can squeeze it in (no pun intended) and his music makes my ears bleed, his opinion reaches millions of impressionable fans.  Was Christina merely offended by his statements?  Is there some other drama going on between them?  Let’s hope all the social media attention and blogosphere speculation leads to some clarification from the Divine Miss X.  Now excuse me while I cry listening to “Beautiful” for the millionth time.

Sealed with a kiss,

Samir

Bay Area’s Doe Eye is off to the Billboard Battle of the Bands!

Our very own Bay Area native Doe Eye who was interviewed by Cal TV this past February, was nominated by Billboard.com as one of three semi-finalists to represent the West Coast in the battle of the bands, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 18th.

For weeks Doe Eye and her followers utilized social mediums such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr to encourage friends and fans to support her nomination by voting on Billboard.com.

Turns out wishes can come true! With only eight months since the release of her EP titled Run Run Run, which features four singles, Doe Eye was selected as the finalist to represent the entire West Coast at the Battle of the Bands.

On Tuesday, Doe Eye was stocked to make the announcement through her official Facebook page, she posted: “WEST COAST I LOVE YOU I AM A FINALIST IN THE BILLBOARD BATTLE OF THE BANDS THANKS TO YOUR VOTES. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IN MAY, ME AND MY BAND WILL BE HEADING TO VEGAS – REPRESENTING THE WEST COAST!! OWW OWWW!!!!!”

During the battle of the bands Doe Eye will be competing against five other bands that are representing their side of the US (East Coast, Midwest, etc).  The big price these artists will be competing against is the opportunity to perform in the 2012 Billboard Music Awards being held on May 20th, 2012.

Doe Eye’s rapid success is unheard of, the new artist has also gained an immense group of fans from around the world that are willing to support her with more than just Facebook likes. In the month of March, Doe Eye commenced a Kickstarter project, in which through a quirky and sweet home made video she requested donations from fans and friends to help produce her new album and music video. The goal for her project was that of $5000, towards the end of the month Doe Eye’s fans and supporters surpass her ultimate goal by over $605, leaving the artist with 5,605 free dollars to work on her upcoming projects.

Doe Eye continues her higher education at Berklee College of Music in Boston; while also touring and working on her upcoming album scheduled to released in September of 2012.

This girl is obviously someone to stay in tune with! CalTV congrats to Doe Eye in her accomplishments and is proud to have her as a Bay Area Artist.

Here is the link to our recent interview with Doe Eye, where she still had no clue this would all be happening!

Lil Twist & Tyga come to Bay

On Thursday, March 29th the bay received Lil Twist, YG and Tyga for a showcase of some hot up and coming talent in rap/hip-hop music.  The show opened with Lil Twist, an artist “in the making” (under the wing of Lil Wayne) who is currently working on his soon-to-drop album Don’t Get it Twisted (4/17), which will include collaborations with A-list artists such as Nicki Minaj and Drake.

Judging by his performance that night he will definitely make a big blip on the radar soon. Following his introduction Lil’ Twist entered the stage and got the party started. His playful energy got the crowd amped for the rest of the evening. From the beginning to end of his set, Lil twist jumped around stage and made sure to interact with the audience.Very few times do opening performers get crowds going so soon, I must admit Lil Twist did that very well. He’s got that young heart-breaker swag combined with an unmistakable air of triple confidence.

Perhaps working with rappers such as Bow Wow and Busta Rhymes have

taught Lil Twist how to work it for the ladies, who all knew the words to each of his songs. Girls were screaming whenever he moved his hips and reached down to touch their hands.  His female fans had even lined up at the venue as early as four o’clock to get a view right up at the front of the stage.

Following his performance was YG, who threw hundreds of swisher boxes to the crowd during his set, and then Tyga, the performer of “Rap City”. Tyga’s stage scenery was very well done and his performance was excellent, but out of all the performers I enjoyed Lil Twist the most.  I mean really. His stage presence was more than impressive, especially for an eighteen-year-old rapper. It will be fun to see him headline in the future.

It’s a bummer that Tyga did not allow any close-up photos of his performance, especially because his scenery was amazing for such a small venue.  (We still got a couple shots of it from afar). But we still love Tyga! And the crowd was not disappointed, judging by fan tweets saying “Tyga killed it tonight”. San Francisco’s Warfield full house remained until the curtain fell.

Check out our shots from the show and gives some feedback!  What do you think, Lil’ Twist might surpass his pal Justin Bieber soon?
